what is it with old plots coming back to haunt me?

I saw a terrible miniseries about Attila last night that reminded me of my Mongol/Time Travel story that was originally a Hun/Time Travel story, until I realized that Mongols are teh cool. And that Gengis Khan could take Attila down any day.

It's entirely possible that I'm somewhat too much of a history geek.

Also, what's the thing with categorizing writers? It's not enough that people get a bajillion labels stuck on them every day, you get labeled there too.... I really don't understand. I bring this up because I was asked for help on a story yesterday, which was of no interest to me- D&D style fantasy- because I'm the "fantasy geek." I don't know where they got that, really. I read certain sorts of fantasy, yes, and write it...but I read and write scifi, and historical stuff, and intrigue, and a crapload of nonfiction history books, too. So...I dunno. I had a point originally. I guess I just got annoyed at that. Don't know why, really. It just got to me. Maybe 'cause I'm not really in so much of a fantasy mood lately. Ironic, since I'm trying to write fantasy...

They are.

But so are the Xiongnu, albeit in a different way.

I have a hug theory about the Huns in Disney's Mulan being Xiongnu, because they call their leader Shan-Yu, and shan-yu was the term for a Xiongnu leader. Bizarrely, the source I found that in was really obscure, so I'm sort of puzzled that Disney managed to pick that term to misuse as a proper name. (Yes, I do also have issues with Mulan's horse being named Khan. It's too much like being a Brit and naming your horse Führer during WWII. Or ever, really.)

*cough*

I think I have lost the remaining scraps of my sanity. Sorry 'bout that.

Never heard of Xiongnu. Direct me to some info? *puppyeyes*

Disney is weird, and I think the writers occasionally stick strange "coincidental" things into their movies just to confuse peoples.

Er. Or not. *rambling*

Don't worry, you're in good (bad) company. My sanity ditched me looooong ago.

Eek. 'Huns' often, but not always means 'Xiongnu' (Hsiung-nu in Wade-Giles.) There are also a bunch of other terms, and the tribal distinctions are way blurry. It is a bitch to find information on them -- I wanted to write a paper in high school about the differences between the role of women in Xiongnu society and in Chinese society, but it didn't work. Grr.

(Xiongnu, iirc, means something rather nasty in Chinese, and so is probably not the best term to use, but 'Hun' is pretty imprecise.)

Um. I found a really good bibliography online several years ago, but I couldn't find most of the books in it. Will look into it lately.

*slightly cynical about Disney*

Me, too. Which is why I'm so surprised they apparently found that piece of information.

What really gets me is when people refer to women who write as "women writers." As if all women who write have the same ideals.
