Jan. 23rd, 2007 01:02 pmAnybody here watch Top Chef?
I've been thinking about the last episode. When I first watched it, it bothered me, but "I can't believe they did that!" was about the extent of it.
The TWOP recap just came up, though, and after reading it I started browsing the forums... saw screencaps which prove that the attack on Marcel happened before (or at least during; you only see one side of Elia's head in the shot) the giggly head-shaving part. I already thought that Marcel should win, because the others don't deserve to after their actions, even if Sam (and occasionally Elia) are better cooks. Reading other people's comments on it, though, got me thinking, and I've gone from shocked about it to flat out, completely revolted. They should just cancel the damn season, frankly, because Marcel's obviously going to win, and nobody who could participate in something like that (drunk or not), deserves to win ANYTHING.
How do you do that? I mean, a couple of people have tried to defend Elia, but I don't buy it. You do NOT let something like that go down. I can't conceive of being in or near the room and not stopping it, or at least trying to.
Maybe I'm unsympathetic to how other people deal with a situation like that because I know how I would react- how I HAVE reacted. I don't let that happen. I'm the one in the group- I have ALWAYS been the one who says "This is fucking stupid, guys, let's go do something else." I don't give a shit if it makes me less popular, I'm not doing dangerous or excessively stupid things. I don't understand how anyone can. I don't understand how you can watch a burly six-foot guy pin down someone half his size and physically underwhelming. Even if you hate Marcel, which for some reason they seem to, it's unconscionable. Drop me in that scene and I would be screaming my head off, going at Cliff physically if necessary (and I'm even smaller than Marcel), and offering to stay with Marcel after. Any one of my friends would do the same.
I guess I'm just kind of shocked... sickened, really... that people can stand by and do nothing (there goes the cynic tag I so pride myself on). I don't care what the circumstances are: manhandling someone who does not consent to it is assault and violation. How do you exist as someone who doesn't want to stop that?

Okay, long and thinky post is over. Back to sudoku.
