matchstick girl

She slips through crowds and metal and dust, listening, watching. Wires weave through her body, clothes, hair, a walking advertisement- buy from me, keep me safe another day.

The air is thin and cool, made colder yet by a breeze that wafts- no, drifts- no. The breeze crawls, a living thing of dust and breath and buy this, buy that. So many voices, too many, fading into a babbling slience, not one standing out from the others.

It's cold, yes, too cold for a barefoot girl, but home- heat- not until she sells her wares, if she plans to breathe tomorrow.

Such a crowd, too many people to notice a child slipping out near the docks. Ferries are left running; the engines are always warm. Safe? Relatively.

Pale limbs and vibrant wires twist and coil, tucked into a curve of a ship's engine.

Lazy dockhands, hurried pilots...can't tell what debris is burnt when a ship takes off.

Expand, or no?
