I live in the boonies, fifteen minutes to a town, forty-five at least to a city of any note. And I used to drive to Sac on a regular basis. I consider anything within a hundred-mile radius to be 'close'.

P.S. I'm not sure koalas are cool. Cute, definitely. For cool I think we might have to go with wombats or something.
